STE. GENEVIEVE – When you are a firefighter, you never know what the next call will be.
Earlier this week the SGFD was requested to assist Bloomsdale Volunteer Fire Department with an animal rescue. We arrived to find a prized hunting dog that had slipped off a steep embankment in the Magnolia Hollow Conservation Site.
The dog had been stuck on a ledge halfway down an approximately 100 foot tall bluff for over 24 hours.
We were able to set up a rope rescue system and lower a man down to retrieve the dog and then down to the railroad tracks below. The owner was very thankful.
Some may ask “Why so much effort for a dog?”.
Setting up and doing this rescue gave us a chance to practice what we would need to do when there was no human life in jeopardy. Everyone involved worked well together and got the job done safely.
