Fire in trailer at transfer station destroys trailer, building saved

SERENO — A fire was reported at the transfer station in Sereno in Perry County Sunday.

Major Bill Jones of the fire department said it was reported about 10:23 a.m. when a passerby spotted flames coming from a trailer inside a metal building.

The Perry County Rural Fire Department responded and had the fire out by about 1:45 p.m.

An excavator was used to pull the trailer, which was fully loaded with trash, out of the building to make it easier to fight the fire.

At this time, it is believed that the trailer, which was loaded on Friday, probably had something in the trash, which was smoldering, or spontaneous combustion may have occurred.

The trailer was a total loss, the metal building the trailer was located in did not receive much damage, other than some lights.

The loss of the trailer is giving the transfer station workers some headaches as they now have only two trailers to take the trash to a landfill in Illinois.

Otherwise it is normal operations at the facility on Highway 51 in Sereno.

It was a busy afternoon for the firefighters.

Before the trailer was fully extinguished there was another fire call, this to a grass fire on Perry County Road 300.

Some of the firefighters at the trailer fire and others from the fire house responded to it.
