Valle students are first and second in Voice of Democracy contest

STE GENEVIEVE — August Palmer (1st place) and Drake Meyer (2nd place) are this year’s winners of the Voice of Democracy contest.

The theme this year was “Why Is the Veteran Important?”

Students submitted a 3-5 minute recorded essay addressing the topic. Essays were judged on originality, content, and delivery. Out of many good essays, these two fantastic essays were chosen by our veteran judges as the best.

August’s essay has been moved on to be judged at the district level. Essay winners can make their way from the post level to district, state, and national levels.

Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ (VFW’s) premier scholarship program.

Each year, nearly 80,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives.

August and Drake are pictured with their teacher, Mr. Grigaitis, and Lois Flieg and Betty Arnold, representing the VFW. Congratulations!
