PERRYVILLE — A man who is a suspect in the theft of two vehicles Thursday was apprehended without incident after a high speed chase on I-55 that began in Perryville and ended in Jefferson County at the 174-mile marker.
According to reports, that man stole a blue Chevy SUV from a small town near Chicago and drove it to Perryville, where he found he was low on gas. He pulled into the Burger King parking lot where he found a red Toyota Camry which had been left running in the parking lot while its owner went inside. A few minutes later the victim came out and asked where her car was when she found another vehicle parked where she had left her car. Fortunately, there were witnesses who saw it all and knew which way the Camry went.
Perryville police arrived on the scene quickly and headed north on I-55 where they found the Camry racing up the highway at a high rate of speed. Some say the speed reached 140 miles an hour.
Ste. Genevieve County and Missouri State Highway Patrol units joined the chase which ended, thanks to the use of spike strips, at the 174-mile marker in Jefferson County and the suspect was taken into custody without incident.
