Lady Jackets win 2-of-4 matches at 2022 Freeburg Monster Mash Volleyball Tournament

CHS falls to Pinckneyville and Mascoutah and wins against Benton and Hillsboro; finishes 9th in event

CHESTER – Chester High School competed in the 2022 Freeburg Monster Mash Volleyball Tournament Saturday October 15.  The popular event featured numerous teams from the area and the Lady Jackets fared well winning two matches and losing two others. 

Chester lost its first two matches, one to Pinckneyville and the other to Mascoutah. The rebounded later in the day winning against Benton and Hillsboro. When it was all said-and-done, the Jackets had earned the 9th Place finish among the field of competing teams.

Pinckneyville wins in two sets, 27-25 and 25-22

The Lady Jackets opened the tournament against the Pinckneyville Lady Panthers.  Chester played well and gave the Panthers a run-for-their money, but fell by two points in the first set, 27-25 and three points in the second set, 25-22.

The Jackets tied the first set, 24-24 and took a 25-24 lead.  Pinckneyville came back and tied 25-25. Pinckneyville then took a 26-25 lead and never looked back, adding the winning point to seal the win, 27-25.

In the second set Chester trailed by just two points late in the set, 20-22.  Two serves later the Jackets pulled within one point, 22-23, but allowed the Lady Panthers to score the final two points to take the set win and the match, 22-25.

In the loss, Mabry Wingerter led in assists with 18. She also had 3 digs and 1 block assist. Jordan Buskohl led in kills with 5.  She added 2 digs. Paige Vasquez recorded 9 digs.  She also contributed 2 aces, and 1 block assist. Maggie Caby added 7 kills, 2 digs, 1 ace and 1 assist. Ellen McCormick led the team in digs with 10, followed by 1 ace.

Other contributors included Maleia Absher who had 1 kill and 2 digs.  Paige Thomas added 8 digs. Alexis Eggemeyer recorded 3 kills and 3 digs. Emma Eggemeyer had 1 ace and 3 digs.

 With the loss, Chester dropped to an overall record of 11-10 and a tournament record of 0-1.  Next up was Mascoutah.

Mascoutah wins in two sets, 17-25 and 18-25

The Lady Jackets played hard but fell to Mascoutah in two sets, 17-25 and 18-25.  In the loss Jordan Buskohl led the team in kills with 5.  She added 1 block assist and 2 digs.  Paige Vasquez led in digs with 6. She also contributed 2 aces and 2 assists. Mabry Wingerter led the Jackets in assists with 9. She also had 1 ace, 1 kill and 2 digs.

Other contributors included Maleia Absher who had 1 solo block.  Jasmine recorded 1 kill and 1 dig. Paige Thomas added 1 dig. Ellen McCormick contributed 1 kill and 5 digs. Maggie Caby added 1 ace, 1 kill and 1 block assist. Emma Eggemeyer had 2 digs.

With the loss, Chester fell to an even overall record of 11-11 and a tournament record of 0-2.  The Jacket’s next opponent in the event was Benton.

Chester beats Benton in two sets, 25-18 and 25-20

In their third match of the tournament the Chester Lady Jackets defeated the Benton Lady Rangers in two sets, 25-18 and 25-20.

In the win, Mabry Wingerter led the team in assists with 21.  She also contributed 1 ace, 1 block assist, and 3 digs. Jordan Buskohl led the team in kills with 9. She also added 1 dig. Paige Thomas, Maggie Caby, and Ellen McCormick led the team in digs with six apiece. Thomas added 1 ace and Caby added 5 kills, 1 ace, 1 block assist, and 2 digs. McCormick added 2 assists.

Other contributors included Emma Eggemeyer who recorded 2 digs, Alexis Eggemeyer who had 2 kills, 3 digs and 1 assist. Paige Vasquez recorded 2 aces, 7 kills, and 4 digs. Maleia Absher added 1 assist and 2 digs.

With the win, the Lady Jackets moved into a winning overall record of 12-11 and a tournament record of 1-2.  The final match of the Monster Mash featured the Lady Jackets and Hillsboro.

Lady Jackets beat Hillsboro in two sets, 25-18 and 25-17

In the final match of the Monster Mash the Jackets played Hillsboro, winning in two sets, 25-18 and 25-17.

Paige Vasquez led the Jackets in the win with 8 kills, 5 digs, 3 aces and 1 solo block.  Ellen McCormick led the team in digs with 9. She added 1 ace and 4 assist. Mabry Wingerter led in assists with 12.  She also had 1 ace, 4 kills, and 3 digs.

Maggie Caby recorded 1 ace, 4 kills and 4 digs. Jordan Buskohl added 6 kills. Maleia Absher contributed 2 kills and 2 digs. Elaina Lutman added 5 assists and 4 digs. Paige Thomas had 1 dig. Emma Eggemeyer contributed 1 ace and 2 digs. Alexis Eggemeyer added 1 dig. Finally, Grace Welborn had 1 kill.

With the win, Chester improved to an overall record of 13-11. The Lady Jackets also closed out the 2022 Freeburg Monster Mash with a tournament record of 2-2 and finished 9th out of the field of competitors. The Monster Mash event closed out Week 7 of the 2022 Lady Jacket’s season.

For the 4-match tournament Paige Vasquez led the team in three statistical categories including aces (9), kills (25 tie), and digs (24).  She also added 1 block and 2 assists. Jordan Buskohl led in blocks with 4 and tied for most kills with 25. She also had 5 digs.

Mabry Wingerter led the team in assists with 60. She also contributed 3 aces, 5 kills, and 11 digs. Maggie Caby recorded 4 aces, 17 kills, 2 blocks, 8 digs and 1 assist.

Week 8 , the final week of the regular season, will feature three matches.  Tuesday October 18 CHS will host the Marissa Lady Meteors for Senior Night 2022.  Wednesday October 19 Chester will travel to challenge the Marion High School Lady Wildcats.  The Jackets will close out the 2022 regular season Thursday October 20 at Wesclin to compete with the Lady Warriors.
