STE. GENEVIEVE — The Ste. Genevieve Board of Aldermen is expected to consider abolishing its requirement that the police chief live within the city limits of Ste. Genevieve.
An ordinance to make the change is on the agenda for first round action at Thursday’s regular meeting.
Former Police Chief Eric Bennett left the city with two suggestions.
One — the board eliminate the residency requirement which has apparently been in effect ever since voters eliminated the elected position of town marshal in favor of having an appointed police chief. That was done in 1976.
The second suggestion was to name Lt. Jasen Crump as police chief.
Lt. Crump has been named the acting police chief.
The appointment of a police chief is on the agenda for Thursday’s meeting.
The city of Ste. Genevieve has begun advertising for a full time tourism marketing director:

City Administrator Happy Welch, in his report to the board of aldermen on the subject, said volunteers from the Tourism Advisory Council and Tourism Tax Commission will be helping to winnow down the applicants to two or three for them to be interviewed by the larger group to make a recommendation for hiring. He said they hope to have some finalists to interview in December with a recommendation at that point or in early January.
On a related note, Welch noted in his report to the board that more interviews are being conducted for the Welcome Center assistant position.
Thursday’s meeting of the Boar of Aldermen will be held at 6 p.m.
The meeting is open to the public and will be shown live on SteGenTV Channel 991 on the Spectrum cable TV.
