Lady Jackets Golf sends two girls to Sectionals

Medford and Luthy advance out of IHSA Class 1A Regional; Both compete at Sectionals

CHESTER–The Chester High School Lady Jacket Golf Team competed at the 2022 IHSA Class 1A Regional Golf Tournament on Thursday September 29th. The event was held at Governor’s Run in Carlyle. 

There were 13 schools that competed at the Regional level. The Top-3 teams advanced to the 2022 IHSA Class 1A Sectional Tournament.  The Top-10 individuals that were not a part of one of the three Top-3 teams also advanced to Sectionals.

The Lady Jackets did not advance to Sectionals as a team, however two of Chester’s Lady Jackets did finish in the Top-10 individuals to advance to the Salem Sectional including Aubrie Medford and Camryn Luthy.

Breese Central Class 1A Regional at Governors Run in Salem

The Lady Jackets competed at Regionals as a team. There were 13 teams competing in the tournament. The Chester girls finished 9th out of the field of 13 teams.

Chester’s Camryn Luthy was the Jackets’ top golfer with a score of 86 for the 18-hole match.  Aubrie Medford was No.2 with a score of 95.  Other Chester finishers included Macy Bert (No.3, 113); Addy Gottschammer (No.4, 133); Jessica Stumpe (No.5, 137); and Rylie Myers (No.6, 140).

The medalist was Reese kite from Waterloo who shot 69 to lead all golfers. Chester had two golfers that qualified to advance to the Sectional Tournament.  The Top-10 golfers who were NOT on a qualifying team qualified to advance.

Chester’s Camryn Luthy and Aubrie Medford both advanced as a result of their Top-10 individual finishes once the girls from the three qualifying teams were taken out of the list of finishers.

The Top-10 individual finishers included Addison Laramore of Althoff Catholic (1st, 80); Brenn Wilson of Red Bud (2nd, 83); CAMRYN LUTHY of CHESTER (3rd, 86); Taylor Hettenhausen of Okawville (4rh, 88); Kristen Gerdes of Breese Mater Dei (5th, 90); Aubrie Smith of Freeburg (6th, 91); Ava Sweeten of Freeburg (7th, 92); Abby Steinkamp of Carlyle (8th, 94); Annabeth Ohlau of Red Bud (9th Tie, 95); and AUBRIE MEDFORD of CHESTER (9th Tie, 95).

The Top-3 team finishers qualified to advance to the Sectional Tournament.  The Top-3 teams included Waterloo (1st, 335); Columbia (2nd, 355); and Breese Central (3rd, 374).

Other finishers included Breese Mater Dei (4th, 381); Red Bud (5th, 402); Althoff Catholic (6th, 411); Freeburg (7th, 422); Okawville (8th, 426); Gibault Catholic (9th Tie, 427); CHESTER (9th Tie, 427); Carlyle (11th, 439); Sparta (12th, 484); and New Athens (13th, 562).

CHS Head Coach, Meg Schnoeker said, “The girls played at Regionals today at Governor’s Run in Carlyle.  The girls hung in there and the freshmen got their first post-season experience.”

“Camryn Luthy led the team with a score of 86, tying for 5th Place out of the field of 78 girls.  She earned the 3rd individual spot to advance to Sectionals. Aubrie Medford shot a score of 95, tying for the 9th individual spot to advance to Sectionals. She also tied for 26th overall out of the field of 78 golfers.”

Salem Class 1A Sectional

The Girls’ Class 1A Sectional Golf Tournament took place at the Salem Country Club Monday October 3rd. Chester’s Camryn Luthy and Aubrie Medford  competed at Sectionals and represented Chester High School well!

There were 12 schools that competed in the team competition.  The Top-3 finishers advanced to the State Tournament.  The Top-10 individuals that were not a part of the Top-3 team finishers also advanced to State.

Since the Chester Lady Jackets did not advance to Sectionals as a team, Luthy and Medford were competing to try and finish in the Top-10 individuals so as to advance to State. Both Chester girls played well, but did not finish in the Top-10 individuals and therefore did not qualify to advance to the 2022 IHSA Class 1A State Tournament.

Camryn Luthy recorded an 18-hole score of 89 and finished 26th out of 112 competitors.  Aubrie Medford shot an 18-hole round of 90 and tied for 27th place out of 112 golfers.

Coach Meg Schnoeker said, “It was a long and competitive day. Both Camryn and Aubrie have a lot to be proud of! These girls were phenomenal team leaders this season and represented the Lady Jackets very well during the regular and post seasons!”

The overall winner of the 2022 Sectional was Madelyn Young of Mt. Carmel. She was the Sectional Medalist.

The Top-3 schools that advanced to the State Tournament were Mt. Carmel (1st, 301), Massac County (2nd, 331) and Columbia (3rd, 349).

The other nine schools included Highland (4th, 367); Salem (5th, 369); Marquette Catholic (6th, 377), Waterloo (7th, 386); Father McGivney Catholic (8th, 395); Breese Central (9th, 396); Goreville (10th, 409); Zeigler-Royalton-Christopher (11th, 412); and Hamilton County (12th , 417).
