MU Extension hosts Adopt-a-Family Program for local families in need this season

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. – The University of Missouri Extension will once again this season host the Ste. Genevieve Adopt-a-Family program.

The Adopt-a-Family program helps create a positive and memorable holiday for children in Ste. Genevieve County by providing gifts, clothing, and necessities to families in need. The focus is on children under the age of 15. Individuals may submit their family for consideration starting October 21. The goal is to have every family matched to a donor by  November 21.

In order to have a successful program this year, MU Extension is reaching out to the community to find organizations and individual donors. Donors choose the number of children they would like to “adopt” for the holiday season. After a match is made, they receive a wish list. Presents are brought to the Extension office to be distributed to the families. Family data other than that contained within gift requests are kept confidential.

Monetary donations are acceptable for those who prefer that method of contribution, and the Extension can perform shopping on the donor’s behalf.

“Not only did 107 children receive gifts last year, but some donors generously provided extra gifts to families in need,” said Estrella Carmona, MU Extension Community Engagement Specialist and manager of the Adopt-a-Family program. “We are so grateful for the community’s response last year, and we are excited to be hosts again this year.”

If an organization or individual is interested in being a donor, please contact University of Missouri Extension at (573) 883-3548.
