Blunt, colleagues introduce resolution to condemn Iran for persecution of women and peaceful protestors

WASHINGTON – Last week, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) helped introduce a resolution condemning the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian woman whose killing by Iran’s “morality police” sparked nationwide protests, and calling on the government of Iran to end its systemic persecution of women. The resolution also celebrates the bravery of the Iranian people protesting Amini’s death despite a violent crackdown by the Iranian government.

“The United States stands with the people of Iran who are fighting for their freedom against a brutal and oppressive regime that continues to be the world’s number-one state sponsor of terrorism,” said Blunt. “I’m proud to help introduce this resolution with my colleagues to support these courageous protestors and to strongly condemn the Iranian regime for its horrific human rights abuses.”

The resolution was led by U.S. Senators James Lankford (Okla.) and Chris Coons (Del.). In addition to Blunt, Lankford, and Coons, the resolution was cosponsored by U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (Ill.), Steve Daines (Mont.), Mike Braun (Ind.), Alex Padilla (Calif.), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Shelley Moore Capito (W.Va.), John Hickenlooper (Colo.), Gary Peters (Mich.), Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), Susan Collins (Maine), Cory Booker (N.J.), Tim Kaine (Va.), Ben Cardin (Md.), Chris Van Hollen (Md.), Patty Murray (Wash.), Bernie Sanders (Vt.), Dianne Feinstein (Calif.), Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Michael Bennet (Colo.), Jerry Moran (Kan.), Bill Cassidy, M.D. (La.), Deb Fischer (Neb.), Thom Tillis (N.C.), Steve Daines (Mont.), John Boozman (Ark.), Dan Sullivan (Alaska), Mitt Romney (Utah), Joni Ernst (Iowa), Ted Cruz (Texas), John Cornyn (Texas), Jim Risch (Idaho), and Tom Cotton (Ark.).
