American Countess limps into Chester

CHESTER— The American Countess cruise ship stopped at the Chester riverfront Wednesday August 24. There were 91 passengers on board, and all had an opportunity to visit the community via Cruise Line tour buses throughout the morning and afternoon.

The ship had experienced engine difficulty with two of its three engines and had to travel with a tugboat providing added power for the trip.

Company personnel said that federal regulations forbid ships to travel without at least two-of-three engines in working order. Unavailability of parts kept company mechanics from being able to repair the damaged engines.

The visit was otherwise successful, and guests enjoyed their visits throughout Chester.

Don Berry, a volunteer tour guide with the Chester Park District, was on hand Wednesday August 24 when the American Countess visited Chester.  Berry is a regular tour guide for tour bus trips that are offered for ship’s guests on most visits.  With Berry is “Greg”, bus driver for the cruise line.  Jim Beers Photo
