Ste. Genevieve 4th Friday Art Walk features three new venues

STE. GENEVIEVE – August 26 marks the sixth monthly 4th Friday Art Walk in Ste. Genevieve’s historic downtown district and organizers say it may be the best so far this year.

In part that’s because three new artspaces have been added this month.

The recently-opened Ste. Genevieve Antique Mall at Market and Front streets is participating for the first time, featuring work by local artist Anita Alsup – along with an amazingly large selection of antiques.

At Oliver’s on North Main Street the work of Terri Cavins is on display – the first time the restaurant has participated in the Art Walk.

It’s also the first time for Rooted Coffee, also on North Main Street, with the town’s newest coffee shop showing art by co-owner Taylor Marberry and local artist J Rissover. Rissover’s work also will be on display at the artist’s own gallery, E•KleK•Tix, located next door.

In addition, Modern Primitive Folk Art & Antiques will return to the walk route for the first time in several months. Located in the Historic Lincoln Schoolhouse at 145 Washington the unique artspace will be showing “Thread Paintings”…embroidered textile wall art; hand-hooked rug pillows featuring hand-dyed recycled wool with one of a kind designs; along with “Bubble Brooches,” an experimental art jewelry featuring thermoplastic fiber. All sales will benefit the Schoolhouse restoration and Animal Rescue groups.

Also in the North Main Street Art District (at N. Main and Washington) Music Art Love will feature artists Dianne Dickerson and Beth Vogelsang, with live music by Paul and Dennie Hogenmiller.

Visitors will find art by Sam Conlon and friends at Only Child Originals and Rust.

On Merchant Street Brix Winery will feature “QR ART.” Owners have added new art pieces and QR codes to all of the art on display at the winery so visitors “can explore art in a new way and easily see where the pieces were acquired, visit the artists’ online shops, get subject details and more.” Owners say new pieces that just arrived from some of their favorite Instagram artists will be on display.

The Sainte Genevieve Art Guild will be hosting three exhibits at the Art Center in the 300 block of Merchant.  Guest artists Hannah and Blake Sanders  from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau have a visiting display of their very modern quilts.  And for anyone who didn’t get to view the Art Guild’s huge Jour de Fete quilt show at the DuBourg Centre there is a not-to-be missed smaller display of quilts made by Art Guild members. (Both these exhibits will close at the end of this month.) The backdrop to both the temporary displays is art by 28 Guild members that includes over 50 pieces of wall art, and another 50 small frames, pottery and sculpture pieces and handmade jewelry.

There are always a few surprises at Silver Sycamore Gallery of Fine Art at Market and Third, this month including new art upstairs and a chance to see the completed painting started by artist Leon Basler during the July Art Walk.

Other venues expected to be open during the event include Quintessential Spice & Tea at 195 Market, showing work by Iris Vincent, and ASL Pewter on South Third,  featuring the newest original work by ASL’s amazing artisans.

“It looks like this could be a really great evening,” an Art Walk representative said. “We’re hoping for good weather and a good turnout by townspeople and visitors. It’s fun and it makes a great date night.”

The Art Walk takes place from 6 to 9 pm. Most Art Walk activities are free and open to everyone.
