KANSAS CITY – The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) for the Midwest declined 0.2% in July, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Energy costs were down 5.7% in July due to declines in the indexes for gasoline and natural gas service. The food index was up 1.2% in July and the index for all items less food and energy advanced 0.3%. Within the all items less food and energy category, prices for shelter and medical care increased and costs for public transportation and apparel were lower.
Over the last 12 months, the CPI-U increased 8.6%. The index for all items less food and energy rose 5.4% over the year. Energy prices advanced 34.1%, largely the result of an increase in the price of gasoline. Food prices were up 12.4% compared to their July 2021 levels.
