Rep. Adam Niemerg urges school districts to opt out of National Sex Education Standards

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has filed new rules with the Secretary of State on the adoption of the National Sex Education Standards, a move State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) hopes local schools will oppose.

“Local school boards have the authority to establish their own curriculum guidelines and do not have to comply with these standards because there is no law requiring schools to teach sex education in the first place,” Niemerg said. “I urge local schools to use their authority to opt out of these over-the-top and obscene sex education standards.”

Niemerg has long been an opponent of the legislation (SB 818), which required ISBE to adopt the National Sex Education standards.

“Much has already been said about what the inappropriateness of the National Sex Education Standards, and there is no need to belabor that point,” Niemerg said. “I and several of my colleagues tried to stop this legislation from becoming law. Now the fight moves to local schools, and I hope parents and school boards will work together to stop this obscene curriculum from taking hold in our classrooms.”
