House Speaker Pro Tem John Wiemann urges Governor to include property tax relief in special session call

O’FALLON, Mo. – Missouri Speaker Pro Tem, John Wiemann, R-O’Fallon, announced Friday he will ask the Governor to include as part of the Governor’s call for a Special Session, changes to Missouri Statutes related to personal property tax assessments. Due to the shortage of new vehicles, the valuations for used vehicles has been artificially inflated resulting in over a 20 percent increase in assessments on personal property.

“Taxpayers should not have to face the burden of increased personal property tax due to inflation caused by a national shortage of vehicles” said Speaker Pro Tem Wiemann. “Changes can be made to our statutes during a special session that would provide relief to taxpayers now and in the future.”
Wiemann further stated that “I fully support the actions of St Charles County and Councilman Mike Elam to pass a resolution offering relief from this increase for residents of St Charles County.”
“This is another reason for the General Assembly to take a serious look at how personal property is taxed in our state and come up with some reasonable reforms that benefit taxpayers while maintaining essential services they have come to expect.”
