Illinois Freedom Caucus
Last week, the US Supreme Court corrected and reversed the ill-conceived 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, returning rulemaking surrounding abortion back to the states. Writing in the majority opinion, Justice Samuel Alito wrote, “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start…Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”
Across the nation the decision sparked rallies from both supporters and protestors alike. It also sparked violent attacks at pro-life pregnancy centers, a demonstration at the Arizona Capitol which shutdown official business, and a call from Governor Pritzker in Illinois for a special session to consider the effects of the Supreme Court decision.
The Illinois Freedom Caucus responds: We are thankful the majority of United States Supreme Court Justices had the courage to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision. Many lives will be saved as a result of this new ruling. The hysteria from pro-abortion advocates in this state over this decision is barbaric and nonsensical. This state will continue to allow abortion for any reason at any time and make taxpayers fund it. Now, Illinois will become even more of a destination state for the killing of the unborn.
Democrat elected officials have responded appallingly. Instead of the old mantra of safe, legal and rare, some have suggested funding the transportation of people from out of state to come to Illinois to receive an abortion. And now the Governor plans on calling for a special session to address the ruling, while ignoring our call for a special session to address our fragile energy supply that threatens rolling blackouts this summer.
Our Governor is out of step with the majority in Illinois who want abortions limited not expanded and who are concerned about gas prices, increasing crime, taxes, and ensuring their children receive a good education.
The Illinois Freedom Caucus vows to focus on problems in Illinois that threaten the quality of life for all families and at the same time will do whatever we can to reverse our extreme abortion laws.
