PERRYVILLE –Megan Buchheit and Kira Hagan have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award which is the mark of the truly remarkable—proof that not only can they make a difference, but that they already have.
Megan did her Gold Award project on connection building at her local middle school. Megan had this to say about her project, “The issue I chose is the mental and emotional well-being of students in middle school. I chose this because I believe that the pressure of being on social media and in school can be very overbearing because I have had some personal experience with this.” She explained that students/kids of that age always have constant access to each other and are able see what others are doing and that can cause many issues. She said, “Everyone can always use help and friends. I learned that I love to help people learn how to be self-sustaining, and that I love teaching people things and having a powerful voice.” Megan earned a Girl Scouts of the USA Gold Award Scholarship for her project and will be putting the money towards attending college this upcoming school year.
Kira did her Gold Award project on the dangers of the sun and how to protect yourself from sun damage. Kira had this to say about her project, “A lot of people do not understand just how dangerous the sun can be. They don’t know all the things that could happen to their body by not properly protecting themselves from it. Some people think that it is cool to have a tan and that is causes no harm. A lot of these misconceptions come from not being educated at a young age about the dangers of sun exposure. As kids they may had not been told the proper ways to apply sunscreen, or they may not have been told why it is so important to use sunscreen.”
Megan and Kira have not only made a difference at Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland but in your community too. It was their courage, confidence, and character that allowed them to earn this prestigious award. Congratulations and we know you both will continue to make the world a better place!
