JEFFERSON CITY— On Friday, in a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court of the United States sided with the state of Mississippi in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, effectively overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and sending the authority to regulate abortion back to the states.
Mississippi’s law sought to ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, directly conflicting with the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision in which the Supreme Court determined there was a constitutional right to abortion, and the 1992 decision of Planned Parenthood v. Casey in which the decision of Roe was upheld. Mississippi’s law was legally challenged by the only abortion provider in the state, Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The Supreme Court decision today siding with Mississippi stated there was no such constitutional right to abortion. The authority to regulate abortion will now be at the discretion of the states since it is no longer a constitutional right protected at the federal level.
Missouri Republican Party Chairman Nick Myers stated, “The Supreme Court’s decision is a great victory in the ongoing Republican efforts for the protection of innocent human life. As we continue our efforts in Missouri, we can rely on the eternal words of the Good Lord ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you,’ Jeremiah 1:5. We know there is still much work ahead. Missouri Republicans will continue to advocate for life, uphold the law, and stand against an extreme Democrat Party’s pro-abortion agenda.”
