CHESTER – A pair of arrests have been made in the June 2 shooting in rural Lenzburg that left one man dead and two injured.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis announced Thursday afternoon that it has arrested Michael W. Johnson, 43, of East Carondelet, Illinois (right photo) and Martin J. Morrison, 43, of Cahokia Heights, Illinois (left photo).

The shooting occurred when a homeowner and two other men interrupted a burglary at 9300 Block of Golden Rule Mine Road and were shot, according to investigators.

The address is a New Athens address, but is closer to Lenzburg.

One man died at the scene and two others were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Both suspects are charged with first degree murder.

Johnson is also charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. He was taken into custody today by U.S. Marshals in Sunset Hills, Missouri, and his bond was set at $2 million.

Morrison is also charged with residential burglary. He was taken into custody June 14, and his bond was set at $1 million.

These charges were the result of many hours of investigation by 18 investigators from departments all over the metro-east assisting the Sheriff’s Department as part of the Major Case Squad.

“I want to thank the Major Case Squad investigators that worked this case, and Assistant St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brian Kerr,” said St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson. “These kinds of crimes are over whelming for most departments, and the hours put in by these investigators over these last 2 weeks is the reason these men are in custody and charged. At least there can be some peace for the victims, and community knowing these dangerous individuals are off the streets.”

A press release stated that more charges could come as a result of the ongoing investigation.
