Gold Award Girl Scout renovates lake area at Camp Tuckaho

ST. LOUIS – June is Great Outdoors Month, a time to embrace the outdoor spirit and explore nature.

Since 1912, girls have explored and strengthened their outdoor skills and commitment to environmental stewardship through Girl Scouting.

In a recent study from the Girl Scout Research Institute, 80 percent of girls have participated in outdoor activities through Girl Scouts that they would not have otherwise done.

Malena Duncan, a graduate of St. Charles West High School, knew she wanted to do her part to ensure every girl has the best time outdoors.

As a Girl Scout overnight camper, Duncan recognized the importance of renovating the lake area at Camp Tuckaho, located in Troy, Mo.

Duncan led her team of volunteers to cut back weeds in the area, lay new grass seeds, power wash the pavilion and add new gravel to the pathways.

She then built cubbies for campers to store their belongings while canoeing and repainted the shed and picnic tables.

Finally, Duncan hosted a fundraiser to purchase new life jackets and received donated life jackets from Academy Sports. Duncan split the new life jackets between all three Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri camp properties.

Duncan’s project will ensure girls will have a safe and fun space while canoeing. The camp rangers will continue to perform maintenance of the newly updated lake area.
