Pick up strikes motorcycle; two killed, one injured

CHESTER — Two persons died and one person was hurt in a traffic crash on Broadway Street in Steeleville Friday afternoon.

The Illinois State Police report 26-year-old Dakota Morrison of Chester was pronounced at the scene; 31year-old Diane M. Gilmer of Steeleville succumbed at an area hospital and 34-year-old Nicholas T. Cook of Du Quoin was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Illinois State Police reports a preliminary investigation indicates the following:

A 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Cook, was traveling eastbound on Broadway Street near James Street in Steeleville.

The motorcycle, with Morrison and Gilmer astride it, was at the stop sign on James Street, at the intersection with Broadway Street.

For an unknown reason, the Silverado crossed into the westbound lane and struck the motorcycle.

The roadway was shut down for approximately three hours for the investigation.

The crash happened about 1 p.m.
