Raccoon who bit police officer tests negative for rabies

PERRYVILLE — A Perryville police officer who was bitten by a raccoon March 29th recently received some good news.

The raccoon has tested negative for rabies.

Perryville Police PIO Jeri Cain said the officer was called to the St. Vincent Catholic Schools by a report of a raccoon wandering around the campus.

The officer was able to corner the beast and attempted to use a net to contain it.

Unfortunately he was unaware the net had a hole in it and the raccoon took advantage of it and tried to escape. That’s when the officer attempted to grab it around the neck. The raccoon twisted his head around and sank one of its teeth into the officers hand despite the officer wearing leather gloves.

Despite the injury the officer managed to complete the capture and the raccoon was sent to a lab for testing after being euthanized.
