Lady Jacket softball goes 1-2 in Week 3

   CHESTER – The CHS Lady Jackets played three games in Week 3 of the 2022 season.  Chester fell, 5-1 at Carlyle Tuesday March 29; got rained out Wednesday March 30 at Gibault; won against Okawville Friday April 1; and lost to Frankfort Saturday April 2. The Jackets are now, 2-5 on the season and are 1-1 in the Cahokia Conference.

Chester’s Kylie Fortner had a good week at the plate in Week 3 with 3 doubles, 2 RBI’s, 1 triple, and 2 singles.  She also scored four times and helped her team defensively in games against Carlyle, Okawville and Frankfort.  The senior is a leader on her Lady Jacket squad. Jim Beers Photo

 

Carlyle 5 – Chester 1

 

Chester opened the Cahokia Conference portion of the 2022 season Tuesday March 29 Carlyle.  Both teams scored in the first inning and were tied 1-1.  Neither team scored in the 2nd or 3rd innings, and the score remained knotted at 1-1.

 

In the bottom of the 4th Carlyle scored 1 run and then added three more runs in the bottom of the 5th to lead, 5-1.  Chester was unable to get around the basses the rest of the game and Carlyle won the first conference game of the season, 5-1.

 

In the loss, both teams recorded eight hits, but three errors hurt the Lady Jackets and helped the Lady Indians to secure the victory.

 

Ashlyn Colvis knocked in Chester’s only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Faith Weaver’s solo home run in the fourth inning broke the 1-1 tie and gave Carlyle the lead, 2-1.  The Indians sealed the win in the fifth inning on a single by Emma Meyer and the Indians added three runs making the score, 5-1.

 

Carlyle’s pitcher, Emma Meyer took the win and Chester’s Emma Eggemeyer got the loss.  In spite of the loss, Chester did have a decent day at the plate with Kylie Fortner, Ashlyn Colvis, and Elaina Lutman each recording two hits apiece and Anna Childs and Camryn Luthy contributing singles. Colvis had the only RBI of the game for CHS.

 

With the loss, Chester fell to an overall record of 1-4 and started the Cahokia Conference season with a record of 0-1.

 

Chester 8-Okawville 1

 

After getting rained out two days in-a-row, Chester managed to play Friday April 1 at home hosting the Okawville Lady Rockets in a 8-1 victory.  The Jackets scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead when Ashlyn Colvis knocked in Chester runners.

 

After holding Okawville scoreless in the top of the 2nd inning, CHS had a huge 4-run bottom of the second inning led by Anna Childs and Kourtney Welton.  Colvis also hit a single and Kylie Fortner blasted a double to increase Chester’s lead to 6-0 after two innings of action.

 

Okawville got on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning, but could not manage to score again as the Lady Jackets won the game, 8-1, adding two more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.

 

Emma Eggemeyer got the win for Chester and only allowed three hits and on run over seven innings of play.  She also struck out five Rocket batters.  Hettenhausen took the loss for Okawville after going just 1 and two-thirds innings and allowing five hits and six runs.  She struck out two CHS batters.

 

In the win, the Jackets recorded six hits on 4 singles, 1 double and 1 triple.  CHS also had 7 RBI’s, and nine runners on base.  Kylie Fortner was huge at the late with a double and triple.  With the win, the Lady Jackets improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

 

Frankfort 6 – Chester 4

 

The Jackets traveled to Frankfort Saturday April 2 for an early morning 10 a.m. non-conference match up.  The Lady Jackets roared out of the dugout in the top of the 1st inning and scored four runs to lead, 4-0 after a half inning of play.

 

Frankfort answered in the bottom half of the 1st inning with two runs to trail by just 2 runs, 4-2.  The next four innings were dormant with neither team able to score.  Going into the top of the 6th inning the score remained, 4-2 in favor of Chester.

 

In the bottom of the 6th, Frankfort managed a huge 4-run scoring spree which gave them the lead and the Jackets were not able to recover. 

 

In the loss the Lady Jackets managed five hits with Anna Childs, Kourtney Welton, Emma Eggemeyer, Kylie Fortner and Ashlyn Colvis contributing one single apiece.  Fortner and Welton recorded doubles. Childs, Eggemeyer, Luthy, and Welton earned RBI’s.  Childs and Elaina Lutman reached base on balls.  Just one YellowJacket player struck out on the day.
