Oscar ‘Big O’ Herman Schwent

A funeral will be held today for 99-year-old Oscar “Big O” Herman Schwent of Perryville, Missouri who passed away Thursday, March 10, 2022 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

 

He was born October 8, 1922 in Weingarten, Mo., the son of Herman Joseph and Christine P. (Grither) Schwent, who both preceded him in death.

 

Oscar married Bernice Berkbigler and then later he married Zola Wilson, both preceded him in death.

 

Survivors include two sons: Keith Schwent and Gary Schwent, both of Perryville; a daughter: Brenda (Wayne) Davis of Ste. Genevieve; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

 

He was also preceded in death by four brothers: Milferd Schwent, Bernill Schwent, Bernard Schwent, and Virgel Schwent; two sisters: Anglina Behrle and Bernardine Sauer; and a daughter-in-law: Sylvia Schwent.

 

He was the owner/operator of City Tavern for 19 years. He then was a custodian at Perry County Memorial Hospital and later for the Perry County Courthouse.

 

Oscar was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, American Legion Booster, Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree and Flees.

 

Oscar loved bowling, fishing and Cardinal Baseball.

 

Visitation will be 8-9:30 a.m. today at Ford & Young Funeral Home in Perryville.

 

A funeral mass for 99-year-old Oscar “Big O'” Herman Schwent of Perryville will be held today at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Perryville with Fr. Joe Geders, C.M. officiating.

 

Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Perryville.
