A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 17 for 86-year-old Barbara A. Hanger of Chester, Illinois, who passed away at 5:05 a.m., Sunday, March 13, 2022 at her residence.
She was bornMarch 25, 1935 in Chester, daughter of Wilfred and Odilia (nee Bert) Thummel who both preceded her in death.
She married Lenard Hanger on April 16, 1955 in Chester, Illinois; he survives in Chester.
She is also survived by two sons: Richard Hanger of Chester and Robert Hanger of Sparta, Ill.; two daughters: Debra Bauer and Susan Loucks both of Chester; four stepbrothers: Ronald (Betty) Surman, Roger Surman, Bill Surman and Kenneth (Connie) Surman, all of Chester; a stepsister: Patti (Marion) Brown of St. Mary, Mo.; eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; one great great grandchild due in March and a great great grandchild due in April; a special friend: Carol Colvis of Chester, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was also preceded in death by: her step father: Andrew Surman, Jr.; a son: John Hanger, Sr.; a step brother: Dennis Surman; a daughter-in-law: Debbie Hanger and a son-in-law: Todd Loos.
She was a nurse at St. Ann’s Nursing Home for more than 15 years and had worked in the healthcare industry since she was 16 years old.
Barbara was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Chester, Illinois.
She was also a life member of the V.F.W. Post No. 3553 Auxiliary in Chester.
Barbara enjoyed gardening and working in the yard, fishing in her lake, gambling, traveling and loved spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
It was Barbara’s wish to be cremated.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 17, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery with Danny Miller officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic School, St. Mary’s Catholic Church or St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Memorials are being accepted at Pechacek Funeral Homes in Chester.
