Mo bill would offset rising fuel costs in midst of crisis in Ukraine

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Representative Adam Schwadron is looking to protect Missouri consumers at the fuel pump in the midst of the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Schwadron, a Republican from St. Charles, Friday filed House Bill 2801, which proposes to create a one-time, six-month tax holiday on motor fuel sales in the state of Missouri in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the expected ensuing rise in motor fuel prices.

“I believe the long term fix for rising motor fuel prices is continuing on the path toward American energy independence by making use of all of America’s natural resources; however, in this time of crisis, we cannot wait to take action to relieve consumers in Missouri of the rapidly increasing prices at the pump,” Schwadron said. “When my legislative assistant brought this proposal to my attention, I knew it was important to introduce this legislation immediately.”

Rising motor fuel costs are most likely to affect hard working Americans the most as their costs to travel to and from their places of work affect their bottom line of take home pay.

House Bill 2801 contains an emergency clause which would cause it to take effect immediately upon passage by both chambers of the Missouri General Assembly and being signed by the Governor.

The legislation is currently awaiting referral to committee where it would receive its first round of debate and an up or down vote in the legislative process. Citizens can follow the legislation’s progress at https://www.house.mo.gov/bill.aspx?bill=HB2801&year=2022&code=R.
