SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Under a bill filed by state Rep. Mike Zalewski, D-Riverside, community members could receive reimbursement if they supply video footage from their home security systems that assists in the apprehension and prosecution of criminal activity.
“One of the biggest challenges that law enforcement faces in the prosecution of crime is the lack of evidence,” said Zalewski. “So even though they know a crime has occurred, without strong proof of who committed that crime, criminals can continue to walk free and commit violent acts against the community. If we want to stop crime, then we all need to work together to hold those who believe they are above the law accountable.”
Zalewski has filed HB 4359, which would reimburse people $100 for providing video footage from their home surveillance systems to the police if it assists in the prosecution of a crime. With more and more people relying upon home security systems, Zalewski is hoping that individuals will become more willing to assist law enforcement in the prosecution of crime.
Based on recent data from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and Chicago Police Department, 2021 was one of the deadliest years on the books for the City and the County. As lawmakers, law enforcement officials, and other community stakeholders continue to grapple with how to reduce the number of lives lost to violent crime, Zalewski introduced his measure as one option to ensure that law enforcement officers have the necessary resources to prosecute crime.
“We are one community, and we cannot continue to allow for gangs to take over due to a lack of accountability,” said Zalewski. “People should not be forced to live in fear, and we fortunately have the technologies where we can hold violent actors accountable. If you have any knowledge or evidence to assist in the prosecution of a violent crime, then I encourage you to contact your local law enforcement office as soon as possible to ensure an investigation can take place.”
