Six die when tornado hits Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Ill.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — In Illinois, six persons were reported killed in the collapse of an Amazon distribution center in Edwardsville.

The Edwardsville Fire Chief said during a news conference Saturday, the tornado struck about 8:35 p.m.

He said 45 persons made it out of building relatively unharmed and one was seriously injured and was airlifted from the scene.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker traveled to the scene Saturday and commented after viewing the destruction.

“This is a tragic day in Illinois history.” He said. “To the families whose loved ones have lost their lives in this disaster: Please know that the people of Illinois stand with you.

We will help you through your grief, and honor your loved ones. May their memory be a blessing.”

“I want to recognize the tremendous overnight efforts of local emergency responders here in Edwardsville who moved quickly to save lives. Our Illinois Emergency Management Agency continues to work directly with local officials to monitor storm impacts throughout the state – especially in Central Illinois.

“I ask every Illinoisan to take a moment to offer a prayer for the Edwardsville community and especially for the families who are grieving today.

“My administration is committed to assisting in every aspect of the immediate recovery.
