Wednesday’s earthquake measured 4.0 on the Richter scale

JEFFERSON CITY – A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported in southeast Missouri Wednesday evening. There were reports of minor damage according to state officials.

The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency team met with its response partners from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources following the magnitude 4.0 earthquake that was centered in Williamsville, in southeast Missouri and occurred just before 9 o’clock Wednesday night.

State Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Remillard used this opportunity to discuss our state response framework and procedures in the event of a large magnitude earthquake.

Regional coordinators are embedded throughout Missouri and checked in with local partners Wednesday night and again Thursday morning to verify and document any damage.

In addition to car alarms sounding, there were scattered reports of bottles falling off of shelves, pictures and clocks coming off walls and at least one report of drywall cracking.

As an additional exercise, MoDOT’s engineers were to begin conducting bridge inspections later Thursday, though, again, no damage to such structures has been reported.
