Ste. Genevieve County Library releases 2024 Annual Report

STE. GENEVIEVE – Ste. Genevieve County Library is excited to release its 2024 Annual Report, a required submission for all libraries in the state. This report provides a transparent look at both the successes and challenges libraries face.

“This report is a great indicator of our library’s health, especially when reviewed year after year,” said Library Director Shawn Long. “Since I started compiling these reports in 2019, we’ve seen consistent growth across all trackable metrics.” The report, highlights visitor totals, usage statics, the 2024 budget and other relevant trackable data in one easy to read report.

Compared to the previous year, the library saw a 13 percent increase in total physical checkouts, setting a new record with 25,016 books borrowed in 2024. However, while fewer patrons requested items from other libraries, books sent out to other libraries increased by 11 percent —a trend Shawn views positively.

“This tells us that our patrons are finding the books and materials they need right here, without having to request as much from other Evergreen libraries. Plus, the increased demand for our collection statewide is great news for us.”

Digital checkouts also saw a 13% increase over 2023. “We ended the year with 12,302 total digital checkouts across our two platforms, Libby and Hoopla,” said Shawn. “Our patrons love the versatility of our digital resources, and despite budget shortfalls, we made every effort to maintain this service.”

The only notable decline was in new library card sign-ups, marking the first time in five years that the number didn’t surpass the previous year. “We ended with 416 new cards,” Shawn noted. “However, when I looked into renewals, I saw a completely different story. In 2024, 1,292 library cards were renewed in some form—significantly more than in years past. This is telling me that more people are getting, and using their library cards”

Overall, the health of the library remains strong, with the annual report reflecting a well-used and valued community resource. For anyone on the fence about investing in the library through the upcoming ballot levy, Shawn encourages them to review the report. “The data clearly shows just how well used the library is to our community.”
