Perry County wants to be in Missouri’s German Heritage Corridor

JEFFERSON CITY – Missouri’s German Heritage Corridor spans the Missouri River from St. Louis City to western Missouri’s Lafayette County.

State Representative Rick Francis wants to add Perry County to the corridor.

The Perryville Republican said he is sponsoring a bill that looks to Perry County’s historic past.

“Perry County had German immigration starting as early as the 1820s. And it continued through the 1880s. And we have examples of advertisements during that time that were sent back to Germany describing Perry County as a place that all should come to live.”

Under his proposed bill, the Department of Transportation could place suitable markings and informational signs in the designated areas of Perry County, the costs of which will be paid for by private donations.

Francis’ bill has received the support of tourism advocates in Perry County. A committee hasn’t voted on it, yet.
