Food prices rise 12.7 percent, energy prices are up 20.7 percent

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Prices in the Midwest Region, as measured by the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U), increased 0.2 percent  in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday.

The index for all items less food and energy was up 0.4 percent , and the food index rose 0.8 percent  over the month.

The energy index was down 1.7 percent  in September, mainly due to a decline in prices for gasoline. Among the indexes within the all items less food and energy category, prices were higher for owners’ equivalent rent of residence and apparel.

Over the last 12 months, the CPI-U advanced 8.1 percent . The index for all items less food and energy increased 6.2 percent over the year. Food prices were up 12.7 percent  compared to September 2021. Energy prices advanced 20.7 percent, led by an increase in the price for gasoline. (See chart 1.)
