Aldermen hear resident’s complaints during public forum

STE. GENEVIEVE — The Ste. Genevieve Board of Aldermen heard an impassioned plea from a city resident who says there are homes in her neighborhood with accumulations of trash and occupied by individuals who have stolen items from her family. She says she has talked to city officials and nothing is ever done. She said if this situation was happening in the downtown historic district, it would be a different story.

City Administrator Happy Welch noted that since the issue was not on the agenda for last night’s meeting, the aldermen really could not discuss it, but he said the city is working on an update of its nuisance ordinance.

The aldermen also heard from Steve Wilson of Alliance Water Resources and Police Chief Eric Bennett.

Ashley Armbruster announced that the park board had decided to cancel it August movie in the park, due to the heat. She had audiences at previous showings had been rather small due to the heat.

The aldermen approved one resolution declaring certain items of city property to be surplus.

The aldermen approved two street closures.

One street closure is for Jour de Fete. The closures in the downtown area will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, August 12 and end at 7 p.m. Sunday, August 14.

The second street closure is 10 a.m. to noon so the Lt. Col. Felix St. James Camp 326 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War can re-enact the Federal seizure of money from the Bank of Ste. Genevieve in August 1861.

There was no old or new business conducted during the meeting.

The aldermen did conduct a closed meeting during the regular session to discuss the hiring, firing, disciplinary or promoting and employee performance records.

Following the adjournment of the regular session, the aldermen met for a work session to discuss: a street preventive maintenance plan and the city budget — specifically employee pay, health insurance and low or no cost employee benefits.

The meeting was shown live on SteGenTV Channel 991 and on the SteGenTV You Tube Channel.
