Missouri Department of Natural Resources shares tips for greener summer holidays

JEFFERSON CITY – As the summer season heats up, make sure you celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with a bang not a boom! Summertime means more time outside enjoying Missouri’s natural resources.

By making thoughtful choices while planning your outdoor fun, you can help the environment and save money.

  • Reduce, reuse and recycle: When it comes to setting the picnic table, use reusable flatware, silverware and cloth napkins. Fitted sheets in fun prints can double as table clothes and using a Frisbee as a plate is a fun way to get the kids involved.
  • Tread lightly: If you are traveling to your destination, make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and don’t over pack. Leaving those extra ‘kitchen sink’ items at home can lighten your load and save on fuel consumption.
  • Make sure your grilling is on point: If the fire needs a little help getting started, use a chimney starter rather than lighter fluid to get it going. This cuts down on chemicals released into the air. Not sure what to cook? Check out your local farmer’s market for healthy, fresh food items that can satisfy even the pickiest of guests. Buying local cuts down on transportation costs and helps the local economy.

With a little creativity and planning, you can help alleviate unnecessary waste in our landfills and have a blast this summer.
