Blunt calls out Democrats for shifting rationale for election takeover push

WASHINGTON – At the weekly Republican leadership press conference Wednesday, U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.), the top Republican on the U.S. Senate Committee on Rules and Administration, called out Democrats on their ever-shifting rationale for pursuing a partisan, federal takeover of elections. As Blunt noted, Democrats have pushed similar election legislation for decades, inventing a new basis to justify their power grab with each attempt.

Following Are Blunt’s Remarks:

“Well, for at least 20 years, Democrats in Washington have thought it was to their advantage to nationalize and federalize the election process, thought it was to their advantage to have no laws that really led to either ballot security or voter registration security. And we’re seeing that again today.

“You know, after the 2000 election, Democrats wanted to nationalize the elections because of the voting equipment. After 2016, they wanted to nationalize the elections because of voting security. After 2020, they wanted to nationalize the elections because states were passing election laws that were, in almost every case, a step forward that just might be paring back a little bit from the extraordinary positions they took and should have taken during the pandemic.

“Every year is not a pandemic. Legislators are doing what they’re supposed to do. One size almost never fits anybody. Let alone one size fits all.

“It’s not the right solution, but it’s certainly not a new solution. They’re just—every two years or every four years or every six years, there’s a different reason why Democrats want to takeover the elections and run them from Washington, D.C. instead of state capitals and local county courthouses.”
